🚧 PAVING FOR PROGRESS CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 9-29-2021 🚧

The pavement base for the Chandler Street SW loop, from the 20th Street intersection to the water tower entrance, is completed. Topsoil placement and storm sewer intakes on 20th Street are expected to be completed this week. Residents can drive over the subbase to access their properties.

2021 construction on this project is nearly complete. There will be a temporary construction pause during the week of October 4–8 as crews gear up for a final push to complete construction.

We expect the following work to begin on October 11:
  • Weather permitting, remaining pavement and driveway placement on Chandler Street SW.
  • Sodding of disturbed areas on 20th Street SW.
  • Sodding on the Chandler Street SW loop will follow when the area is ready.

If weather cooperates, we expect to wrap up 2021 construction by early November.

Remaining water main, storm sewer and pavement construction on the Chandler Street SW loop, from the water tower entrance to the Jefferson High School entrance, will begin when weather allows in Spring 2022.

🚧 PAVING FOR PROGRESS UPDATE - CHANDLER ST SW / 20TH ST SW 🚧

Remaining roadway pavement on 20th Street SW was placed recently and all residential driveways were constructed. Over the next few weeks, sod will be placed along 20th Street SW and the completed portions of Chandler Street SW.

Updates between Chandler Street SW’s westerly intersection with 20th Street and the entrance to the water tower:
  • Storm sewer and water main installation is complete.
  • Pavement removal and preparations for new concrete pavement to be placed are underway.
  • Weather permitting, we expect new concrete pavement to be placed in this area by mid-October.
  • This will be the last new pavement placed during 2021.
Picture

Once the Chandler Street SW pavement is completed in this area, remaining 2021 work will include finish grading and sodding along the Chandler Street loop, plus site cleanup and work to ensure the project area is open and safe over the winter. This work is expected to be completed by early-to-mid-November.

At this time, we do not expect any winter work to occur along the Chandler Street loop. Work in 2022 will include the installation of water main and storm sewer, and the construction of new concrete pavement in remaining project areas. This work will begin when spring weather allows.

Paving for Progress Construction Update | 9-8-21

The remaining pavement on 20th Street SW, between Chandler Street and the Jefferson High School entrance, will be placed this week.

Next week, residential driveways will be paved and finish grading of yards will begin. Also next week, the contractor will install new residential water services on Chandler Street. This process will follow the Chandler Street loop up the hill, starting at the westerly intersection with 20th Street and working toward the water tower driveway. There will be brief water service interruptions to individual homes during this time. Homeowners will be notified in advance via door hanger or direct notification.
Picture
When the grading and water connection work is finished, the contractor plans to remove the existing Chandler Street SW loop pavement going uphill, from the westerly intersection of 20th Street to just past the water tower entrance. After base preparations are complete, new pavement will be placed and residential driveways constructed. Temporary pavement will be placed to provide transition between existing and new pavements, preserving access to homes along this stretch. Driveway access will be briefly disrupted for individual homeowners while new driveways are constructed. The contractor will be in contact with those affected regarding the timeline for this work. Finally, finish grading and sodding will be performed at all areas disturbed by this season’s construction.

All of this work is expected to be completed by the end of October, marking the end of 2021 construction for this project. The remaining construction along the Chandler Street SW loop will resume in 2022 when Spring weather permits.

Emergency Preparedness Month

9/3/2021

Being ready for an emergency includes staying informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses, developing a family emergency plan, building an emergency supply kit, and getting involved in your community by taking action to prepare for emergencies.
Picture
In July, the City of Cedar Rapids Iowa Government rolled out an emergency preparedness initiative called “Neighborhood P.A.C.T.” P.A.C.T. is an acronym for Prepare, Act, Communicate, and Train. When a major disaster occurs, you may need to survive on your own for several days. It is important to have a disaster supply kit with a three-day supply of food and water, flashlight, first aid kit, and other essentials. Disaster planning also involves developing a plan for your family if there is a fire or severe weather. Communication is also important and there are opportunities for text alerts from CRNewsNow.com, tuning into AM 600 or FM 96.5, or receiving alerts through an All Hazards NOAA Weather Radio. Training is a great way to help your community so neighbors can share information and resources. More information about the Neighborhood P.A.C.T. initiative is available at CityofCR.com/PACT.

Each month, there will be an emergency preparedness topic available on CityofCR.com/PACT. September’s emergency preparedness topic features actionable steps to take in the event of a power outage.

SAVE THE DATE!!
