Construction Update on Chandler St SW - 8/28/2020

Project construction has resumed following the storm. Most of the new pavement at the Chandler Street and 10th Avenue intersection has been placed, and we expect the intersection will open prior to the September 21 start of the school year.

New water main on Chandler Street is completed to 8th Avenue, and testing is underway between 9th Avenue and 8th Avenue. Water main work will eventually extend to 18th Street.

Finally, construction of the new ADA-compliant sidewalk access to the Jefferson High School softball complex is well underway.

As always, if you have questions or concerns about the project, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our project team. Stay safe and healthy.

Burn Ban Update

The curfew has been rescinded. Electrical power has been restored to nearly all customers in Cedar Rapids and the curfew is no longer needed. We continue to ask residents to be vigilant during the evening and overnight hours when it is more difficult to see debris on sidewalks or roadways.

The burn ban will remain in effect indefinitely. With the elevated temperatures and tree debris drying out very quickly, there is an enhanced fire risk in our community. While outdoor cooking is allowed, we ask residents to exercise caution and ensure the cooking fire is completely extinguished.

Please continue to monitor the weather forecast with severe thunderstorms possible on Friday, August 28. The Linn County Emergency Management Agency will be activating the outdoor warning siren if winds exceed 40 mph because of the significant number of damaged trees and debris from the August 10 derecho.

Individual FEMA Assistance

Picture
Residents of Linn County can apply for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Individual Assistance Program. Assistance can come in the form of grants, low-cost loans, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 for TTY users. Users of 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) may call 1-800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. CST, seven days a week, until further notice. Applications can also be submitted at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.

Solid Waste / Recycling Update

As a reminder, recycling collection resumed this week. Yard waste will be collected again starting the week of Monday, August 31. We continue to collect carts from the street and not the alley at this time. Storm-damage debris pickup will begin the week of August 31.

Tree Debris Update

Picture
The City and its contractors continue to work on picking up curb-side tree debris from all areas of the community. As of August 26, crews have completed the first pick-up on approximately 22 percent of roadways, and have collected approximately 58,000 tons. Crews will return to each neighborhood multiple times to remove both tree debris and storm damage debris such as shingles, siding, etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE! If a City tree, limb or debris has fallen into a street, move the limb to the side of the road if possible and contact Forestry (319-286-5747). The City will first clear the street and then return at a later time to pick up any debris or leftover city limbs. The City will clear alleys but not remove private debris.

Burn Ban Notice by CRFD

A burn ban has been added to the City of Cedar Rapids’ Emergency Proclamation. All outdoor recreational fires are prohibited. Those with asthma, breathing conditions, and those trying to stay cool are affected by smoke lingering in the air. There is also an increased fire danger due to tree debris drying out, and general dry conditions.

NOTE: Burning debris was already prohibited. Now, outdoor recreational fires are also prohibited. Residents can use dried firewood in a fire pit to cook food for the period of time necessary to prepare the food, but then should extinguish it. Charcoal and propane grills may still be used by single-family homeowners. Charcoal and propane grills larger than a one pound cylinder have always been prohibited above ground level in multi-family dwellings and will continue to be prohibited.

Neighborhood Resource Centers

Starting Monday, August 17, Neighborhood Resource Centers will be set up at five sites throughout Cedar Rapids to consolidate resident services.
The centers will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily and be staffed with City employees and volunteers. Initially, the sites will provide food and daily updates on services for residents, and serve as charging stations for those with medical needs. Additional resources will continue to be added including supplies for clean-up, and legal and mental health assistance. The sites are coordinated by Linn Area Partners Active in Diaster (LAPAID) organizations. Services will transition as additional resident needs are assessed.
