October 20, 2025 Meeting Minutes | Call to Order: 7:03pm
Attendance: George Heeren, Nicole Schroeder, Amy Hall-Haney, Denise Klemp. David Maier, Lt. Welsh, Matt Wagner, Trey Wentzien, Mitch DeGroot
  • Treasurer's Report - Amy Hall-Haney - Current balance in checking: $3,901.71 with pending reimbursements of $1,079.97. Submitted the reimbursements in September. George will check the mail this week and report back to Amy so Betsy is in the loop.
  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - CRPD reports overall, 2025 crime is down. 30 weapons stolen from vehicles this year. CRPD recruits graduated on October 3rd from the academy. Lt. Welsh is moving to the East District of Cedar Rapids to serve neighbors. Lt. Denni Randall (she/her) will be reporting on the West District of Cedar Rapids and will be attending CANA meetings in the future.
  • SAFE-CR - Matt Wagner - Citywide stats from September: responded to 162 founded calls for service. With lawn mowing season ending, calls for service will increase for snow removal. Snow Buddies program has been opened for 2025-2026, so applications are now being accepted. Reminder of MyCR app functions. One of the biggest issues right now are the “do not occupy” structures being inhabited by squatters. These approx. 60 properties need to be reported to keep individuals and first responders safe. SAFE-CR is working with Willis Dady to coordinate the street outreach to find shelter or assistance for the unhoused individuals. Winter shelter in the 1200 block of 10th St SE will be opening soon.
  • Letter to Neighbors (mailed 10/5) - Nicole Schroeder - Over 900 letters were sent to neighbors. We had more than 15 new email newsletter subscribers, more than 10 Facebook followers, and two neighbors who had not participated in neighborhood happenings before supported the efforts of our letter by attending tonight’s meeting.
    • CANA leaders took time to explain the history of the NA and current neighborhood initiatives.
    • Nicole made a motion that we resend another variation of the letter in January this year to invite neighbors to our February meeting. Denise Klemp seconded.
      • David Maier added a discussion to move to a postcard or a shortened version of the letter. We will plan for a shortened version of the letter as postcards have not been well-received in the past.
      • All in favor, none opposed. Motion passes. Nicole will prepare another letter for the committee to review and submit to Allegra for print by January 15th and send the second half of January.
  • 2026 Event Plan
    • Easter Egg Hunt with Central Church of Christ - March/April 2026
    • Community Safety & Wellnes Fair - July 2026
    • National Night Out - Tuesday, August 4th - 5:30PM to 7:30PM
    • NEW - Playtime Poppy - George Heeren - Looking to bring a performance of Playtime Poppy to Cleveland Park in June 2026 in honor of its 75th anniversary. There is an approximate cost of $1,500 for this to happen, which includes hiring the staff, the mascot, an activity with the kids on-site, a permit for the park, and the logistics of bringing the performance space to Cleveland Park. George Heeren makes a motion to support this initiative for June 2026 at an approximate cost of $1,500. Amy Hall-Haney seconds.
      • David Maier asked about the timing of the event. This would be in June 26, on the final day of the week-long summer camp.
      • All in favor, none opposed. Motion passes.
  • Other Business
    • Succession planning for President position
    • City Week Open House on Wednesday, October 22, from 4–6 PM at the City Services Center!  Get a behind-the-scenes look at City vehicles and equipment, explore the building, meet adoptable animals from Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control, and enjoy kids’ activities, games, prizes, and more! Plus, grab a FREE Cedar Rapids tote bag—while supplies last! There’s something for all ages, so bring the whole family for this fun, interactive event!
    • City has hired a new Parks Director. George Heeren met with her last week. He asked about the pavilion roof at Cleveland Park. Our pavilion is not the top priority as it’s in better shape than others that need to be replaced. She said the average bid is coming in about $100,000.00.
    • David Maier reminded us of City voting on November 4th. Polling places can be searched at https://www.linncountyiowa.gov/157/Election-Services.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55pm.

We Need Your Support

Dear Neighbor,

In times of challenge and in times of celebration, it has always been neighbors who bring strength to the Cleveland Area. That is how our story began.

After the devastating floods of 2008, a small group of caring neighbors gathered near Cleveland Park to talk about how we could recover, rebuild, and move forward together. From those conversations, the Cleveland Area Neighborhood Association (CANA) was born in 2013. What started as just six or seven committed individuals has grown into a movement that has touched the lives of countless families right here in our neighborhood.

Over the years, CANA has helped to create lasting change. Together, we have:
  • Raised nearly $90,000 to help redesign and rebuild the Cleveland Park playground
  • Hosted National Night Out in partnership with our city’s first responders
  • Offered free trees of different varieties to over 1,200 households through our partnership with Trees Forever
  • Brought dozens of organizations and hundreds of neighbors together for the annual Community Safety & Wellness Fair
  • Kept neighbors informed and connected when connection was needed most through postcards, email newsletters, and Facebook information, like during the COVID-19 shutdown and the derecho
While this doesn’t include all of our community work over the years, these are a few reminders of what is possible when neighbors come together. They show what happens when people decide to invest their time, their voices, and their care into a community worth fighting for.

But today, our neighborhood association is at a crossroads. Many of the same dedicated neighbors who have carried CANA forward for more than a decade are asking for help. For CANA to continue its mission, to keep building a stronger, safer, more connected Cleveland Area, we need more neighbors like you to step forward and participate in our organization’s efforts.

This is not just about meetings. It’s about protecting the sense of community that makes our neighborhood special. It’s about ensuring that families today, and the families who will live here tomorrow, have the same opportunities to thrive. It’s about being part of something bigger than ourselves.

Will you join us? Will you help carry this mission forward?
Will you be part of shaping the future of our neighborhood?

Your time, your energy, and your ideas matter. Whether you can serve in a leadership role, volunteer at events, or simply show up and lend your voice, there is a place for you in CANA.

Let’s not lose what so many worked hard to build. Let’s come together, neighbors helping neighbors, to keep the Cleveland Area strong.

With hope and determination,
The Cleveland Area Neighborhood Association Board of Directors
George Heeren, President
Gaylon Heetland, VP/Secretary

Amy Hall-Haney, Treasurer

P.S. Our next neighborhood meeting is on October 20th at 7:00 PM at Central Church of Christ. This is your chance to meet neighbors, share your ideas, and help shape the future of our community through conversation. We would love to see you there!

July 21, 2025 Meeting Agenda | Call to Order: 7:01 pm
Attendance: Amy Hall-Haney, Nicole Schroeder, George Heeren, Lt. Welsh, Gaylon Heetland, Denise Klemp, Matt Wagner, Chief Smith, Adam Lindenlaub, Ashley Vanorny

  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - CRPD is still working with the current recruitment class. Shots fired calls are trending down from past years in 2025. Since 2016, we have had only one confirmed shots-fired incident.
  • CRFD Update - Chief Smith - CRFD is also working with their current recruitment class. Current retirements scheduled for 2025 are accounted for in this current recruitment class. No major injuries or incidents in 2025 Independence Day holiday week/end.
  • City of Cedar Rapids - Adam Lindenlaub - Introduction. Standing in for Betsy Borchardt tonight. Review Neighborhood News here.
    • George Heeren asked about 5&1 bridge accessibility update at E and F Ave NW. Adam did not have an update on this at this time. He did share information about the traffic control plans nearer the new casino development in that area. $25 million will be spent on the west side of Cedar Rapids for improvements, including the Greenway Parks Plan in the Riverfront area and Time Check area.
    • Nicole Schroeder asked about the Block ‘n Roll trailer usage at other neighborhood events. CANA has used it twice. In 2024, the trailer was used seven times. Current advertising within the city is promoting additional usage.
  • SAFE-CR - Matt Wagner - In the last month, there have been 196 calls for service in Cedar Rapids across 191 properties. There were 126 owner-occupied properties, 55 rental properties, and 15 commercial properties identified. Biggest violation issue this time of year is “tall grass and weeds” at 111 calls, then 44 calls for service due to “disturbance of the peace” (loud music, barking dogs, etc.).. Neighbors are encouraged to report any nuisances through the MyCR app.
    • Nicole Schroeder asked about any recent updates to the MyCR app. No major updates, but Matt explained that neighbors can use the “Location” feature on the left side of the app to drop a pin for the most precise documented location for property identification.
  • Park Updates - George Heeren - Very few issues so far this summer! Very busy and no significant vandalism. New Parks Director for the City of Cedar Rapids has been announced. Her name is Carrie Mardorf. We haven’t been able to get the Parks Department to assist with the roof replacement that CANA has committed to at the Cleveland Park Pavilion. George will be reaching out to David Maier to help bring this to the City’s attention to get this project moving as the roof is in dire need of repair beyond just cosmetic.
    • Nicole Schroeder asked about Shekita Tolbert hosting her back-to-school event at Cleveland Park this year. Her and her husband host a free school supply giveaway and free haircut event annually. As of today, we believe the event is still being hosted, but date is unknown.
  • Safety & Wellness Fair - Nicole Schroeder - On Saturday, June 21st, we were able to host 252 neighbors of all ages, serve 250 FREE picnic lunches (with an extra special thank you to John and Jessica from Hillside Community Church for working on that hot grill!), give away FIVE bicycles from Chain Reaction Bike Hub, TWO FREE car seats from Safe Kids Linn County, FREE first aid kits thanks to Wellpoint, nearly $800 in FREE school supplies from Staples, and over $300 in FREE gift cards and activity vouchers from local businesses and organizations. We had zero complaints (aside from the heat and wind). We are deeply grateful to our sponsors, volunteers, and community partners who made this event possible. We plan to bring it back in June 2026.
  • Treasurer’s Report - Amy Hall-Haney - Current balance $4,371.22 as of the June statement. We still have checks coming and going for the safety fair. Current outstanding balances are for our annual insurance and Idea Queen Marketing expenses. Quarterly City report has been submitted and is available for neighbors to review.
  • CANA Future Questions/Bylaw Review -  David Maier has rescinded his nomination acceptance for the CANA President position. George Heeren agreed to stay on as CANA President until a suitable replacement is found, assuming the bylaws are amended to reduce the number of meetings. It was previously discussed at meetings to hold four meetings per year.
    • Gaylon proposed a motion to change the bylaws to change “5.02: REGULAR MEETINGS section to read “Regular meetings by the Association shall be held four times per year in the months of July, October, February, and May on the third Monday, or at a time and place designated by the President.” Denise seconded. Discussion of changing annual meeting bylaw verbiage; no changes at this time. It was also identified that we need to change the bylaws to update all of the verbiage identifying 10 meetings per year to 4 meetings per year.  All in favor, none opposed. Bylaws will be updated and published ASAP to the website and in CANA email communications.
    • No new nominations for current President occupancy were shared at this meeting. We will continue seeking nominees to replace George Heeren.
    • No new nominations for VP/Secretary were shared at this meeting. We opened voting for the uncontested position as VP/Secretary. Gaylon Heetland has been voted in as the CANA VP/Secretary through July 2026.
    • Ashley Vanorny shared her concerns with the viability of the neighborhood association without finding individuals who are committed to supporting the organization. She encourages CANA to reach out to as many neighbors as possible to come together and grow the interest in CANA moving forward. George Heeren asked how we can communicate to neighbors that we need to find a President by January 2026. Nicole Schroeder proposed a motion to spend to accommodate the costs for a letter with envelopes and postage to notify neighbors of the call for nominations. George Heeren seconded this motion. Discussion included Denise Klemp’s concerns of needing to share the impact of CANA in the last 13 years. Gaylon Heetland suggested a sub-committee meeting before the end of August to send the letter by early September. All in favor to support the original motion with the sub-committee to meet before the end of August. None opposed. Motion passes. Letter will be drafted and prepared for committee review by Nicole Schroeder with Idea Queen Marketing.
Meeting adjourned at 8:12pm.

6th Annual CANA Community Safety & Wellness Fair

6/23/2025

Our team of volunteers with the Cleveland Area Neighborhood Association wants to extend a giant THANK YOU to  those who attended, shared, and sponsored our 6th Annual Community Safety & Wellness Fair last weekend at Cleveland Park!! It was a HOT one, but we're thankful for that breeze (though brutally strong at times) and the ice-cold water. We had SO many new faces (and plenty of returning friends!)....it's safe to say that a good time was had by all!

In 2025, we were able to host 252 neighbors of all ages, serve 250 FREE picnic lunches (with an extra special thank you to John and Jessica from Hillside Community Church for working on that hot grill!), give away FIVE bicycles from Chain Reaction Bike Hub, TWO FREE car seats from Safe Kids Linn County, FREE first aid kits thanks to Wellpoint, nearly $800 in FREE school supplies from Staples, and over $300 in FREE gift cards and activity vouchers from local businesses and organizations.
The Cleveland Area Neighborhood brings a diverse group of individuals and families to the park every year, and we truly enjoy educating, entertaining, and inspiring everyone to learn how to better care for themselves and their neighbors AND connect with our community. Your attendance and continued support make this event possible!

A few thank yous...

  • Thank you to the City Parks & Recreation Department for offering us the Block 'N Roll trailer. If you need it for your event, we highly recommend reaching out to the City! It's a great tool to use for community events.
  • In addition to the event supplies provided in the trailer, Gene, Amy, and the crew from Central Church of Christ were able to help supply extra tables and tents!
  • Thank you to David Maier and HyVee for making our picnic lunch FREE to ALL attendees and volunteers.
  • Thanks again to our returning supporters of our bike helmet giveaway, Jacob and the team with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services. Their approach to serving the children in our community is incredibly meaningful to us, as we serve many families who may not be able to purchase bike helmets for their children otherwise.
  • A BIG shout out to our newest event supporter, Wellpoint!! With their sponsorship in 2025, Wellpoint made all of our goals possible this year, including the FREE first aid kits for ALL attendees.

If you are interested in joining us as a sponsor in 2026, please contact our volunteers to let us know!

Attendance: Amy Hall-Haney, Nicole Schroeder, Valerie Smith, George Heeren, Matt Wagner, Chief Smith, Lt. Welsh, Gaylon Heetland, Rose Heetland, David Maier, Denise Klemp

  • Linn County Auditor’s Office - Valerie Smith - Review of the process of voting in Iowa. Iowa is waiting for the Secretary of State’s office for final notice of any changes for upcoming elections. Based on reading the current legislation, the upcoming changes will only affect US naturalized citizens. Election offices are not allowed to mail out request forms for absentee ballots. They can only send the absentee ballot request forms that are personally requested through the Election Office.
    • George Heeren asked about where new US citizens can learn about candidates. The election office does not have that information available, but there are many resource groups within the city, as well as contacts within each political party locally, with which to connect. The Cedar Rapids Public Library also has a reference librarian on staff to get resources from.
    • For voter registration, absentee ballot requests etc., go to LinnCountyIowa.gov/vote

  • CRFD Update - Chief Smith - CRFD has seven in a recruitment class now, with three individuals being added. In late May, the Iowa Governor signed a new bill that allows all localities to discharge fireworks on July 3rd and 4th, as well as December 31st. Fireworks are for sale within City limits as well. On any day that discharge is not allowed, CRPD will come out for fireworks calls for service.
    • David Maier shared thanks to CRFD and CRPD as they showed their support at the Juneteenth celebrations in Newbo as well as the protests in Cedar Rapids.
  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - CRPD swore in 10 new officers on May 28th. The city put out information regarding fireworks on their website for neighbors to review. That information can be found here. Overall, crime is down in Cedar Rapids in 2025. This year is expected to be approximately. 67% lower than the five-year average for shots fired.
  • SAFE-CR - Matt Wagner - 128 founded calls for service in May 2025. 66 recorded as owner-occupied properties. Any disturbances within Cedar Rapids City limits require a call for service through CRPD dispatch in a timely manner. Tall grass and weeds are handled through Solid Waste, and they can be reported through the MyCR app. Summer is a popular season for graffiti as well, so please keep an eye out for any graffiti issues in your neighborhood.
    • Amy Hall-Haney inquired about nuisance properties being transferred from homeowner to homeowner upon the sale of a home. Matt confirmed that this is the case, but any new homeowner can call the City to verify its nuisance status, submit an abatement plan, or request a hearing to remove their address from the list.
  • City Council - David Maier - There has been a lot of buzz around the Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control operations, due to a lack of hours and the conditions of the facility. It’s reported through the CRPD, but ultimately, it’s understaffed and underfunded. The facility is being reviewed for feasibility and upgrades that may be available to accommodate the growing needs of the staff and space.
  • Treasurer's Report - Amy Hall-Haney -  Current account balance is $2,077.37. Waiting on reimbursement of $1,993.85 from the City. Amy has loaned CANA $3,000 to pay for the invoice from Trees Forever. All bills are currently settled and paid in full at this time.
    • David Maier commented that the City does have a process to provide funding to NAs over $2,500 for big up-front expenditures. He looked into it for us.
  • Neighborhood Tree Update - Denise Klemp - 42 trees at $75/each were planted in CANA limits!
  • CANA Community Wellness & Safety Fair 6/21/25 - We have secured sponsors for the picnic lunch, the helmets, and the first aid kits as a presenting sponsor. We have started promotions for the event, and we have already received good feedback on social media about it! We have a surplus of our CANA budget allocated to the fair, thanks to our sponsor stepping in. Amy is handling the purchase of local gift cards for giveaways. George is handling the bike purchases from Chain Reaction Bike Hub and the school supplies from Staples. Central Furniture Rescue donated gift bags for us to use at Registration.
    • Gaylon Heetland makes a motion to spend an additional $250 from our budget to purchase additional school supplies, and Nicole Schroeder seconds. All in favor, none opposed. The motion passes.
  • Rollin’ Recmobile - In 2025, Cleveland Park will be recognized as a FREE LUNCH STOP with the Rollin' Recmobile on Tuesdays from 11:30am to 1:30pm. The Rollin' Recmobile will also be at Cleveland Park on Fridays from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. There will be NO Rollin' Recmobile on Friday, July 4th, due to the holiday. Event information is available on the CANA Facebook page.
  • CANA Future Questions/Bylaw Review -  Discussion of current bylaws. Amy Hall-Haney explained the idea of moving CANA meetings to quarterly meetings vs. monthly meetings and responsibilities each quarter, including events and required City meetings. This will be proposed for a vote at the next meeting. Discussion of filling the vacant VP/Secretary position and the upcoming vacancy of President. We are still seeking nominations for these positions.
    • OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS
      • David Maier self-nominates for the President position.
      • Nicole Schroeder nominates Gaylon Heetland for VP/Secretary. Gaylon accepts.
    • NOMINATIONS CLOSED
  • Other business

May 19, 2025 Meeting Agenda | Call to Order: 7:00pm
Attendance: George Heeren, Amy Hall-Haney, Nicole Schroeder, Gaylen Heetland, Rose Heetland, Lt. Welsh, Matt Wagner, Denise Klemp, Chief Smith
  • Treasurer's Report - Amy Hall-Haney -  $2,855.60 with pending reimbursements $1,993.85 coming in. We have donations coming in for the Safety & Wellness Fair.
  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - CRPD is bringing on seven new officers for training with a tentative graduation date in October. Overall crime in CANA limits is down compared to the five-year average.
  • CRFD Update - Chief Smith - CRFD Open House brought in between 300-400 individuals at the end of April. A new ladder truck is coming in July for Station 3.
    • Denise Klemp asked about which Cedar Rapids neighborhood resource center is considered the CANA resource center. The NW Rec Center is the closest to CANA limits. More information can be found here.
    • Nicole Schroeder asked about the monthly PACT information that CRFD used to send out. No new topics are being added, but the information can be found on the PACT webpage here.
  • SAFE-CR - Matt Wagner - 580 active nuisance properties in CR city limits. 95 founded calls for service in April (down from 107 in 2024). Half of the calls for service were specifically for “Disturbing the Peace.” It’s now tall grass and weed season, so please stay vigilant in that around CANA limits.
    • Nicole Schroeder asked about yard care for a vacant property due to death of property owner. Any current nuisance property records will transfer to the new owner if any calls are made on the property for lack of yard work, etc.
    • George Heeren asked about the trees that have been installed and the wind damage. Trees are under warranty for two years for replacement if any issues are reported.
    • George Heeren asked about reporting the VEO Ride scooters left behind at the park. Neighbors should report them through the MyCR app or call VEO Ride directly at 855-836-2256 or email [email protected]. David Maier will look into liability and TOS with VEO Ride users with the City Attorney.
  • Neighborhood Tree Update - Denise Klemp - Not as many people signed up as anticipated with Trees Forever. Email communications have been sent to get 811 out to verify property setup before trees are dug. Trees Forever is tracking the dig permits. Trees Forever will be sending us an invoice by 6/30 for the CANA budget.
  • Dogs in the Park - Rose Heetland - Rose shared concerns about the dogs playing off-leash on the playground and going to the bathroom. Cleveland Park does not have signs like other parks in Cedar Rapids that have rules about dogs. Denise Klemp reminded everyone of the City leash laws.
    • David Maier will look into adding these signs to Cleveland Park. He asked if Cleveland Park had the poop bag dispensers at the park. George shared that we do not because they caused issues at other parks more than they were helpful, according to the Parks Department.
  • CANA Future Questions - Gaylen Heetland  - Gaylen asked about the parameters in keeping CANA going with events only and the City budget support. We will need to check with the City about any arrangements that need to be made in FY planning, but ultimately, we need to keep our 501(c)3 status and attend the quarterly meetings.
  • CERT Training - Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training is happening June 6–8 with Linn County Emergency Management and the Marion Police Department. This free training is a great opportunity for residents to get involved in local emergency preparedness efforts and help build a safer, stronger, and more resilient community. CERT Basic Training provides you with the skills and knowledge to reduce emergency needs during disasters, effectively manage available resources until professional help arrives, and assist neighbors and your community through teamwork, training, and preparation. The classes are free. Registration is online here.
We need to decide how we want to further support the fair. This can include giveaway items, school supplies, new tattoo station supplies, and other ideas.
    • Gaylen Heetland makes a motion to spend $200 on gift card giveaways for the fair, Denise Klemp seconds. All in favor. None opposed. Motion passes.
    • George Heeren would like to purchase multiple bikes to give away at the fair. George made a motion to spend up to $200 on bikes from Chain Reaction Bike Hub, Denise Klemp seconded this. All in favor, none opposed. Motion passes.

April 2025 Meeting Minutes

4/21/2025

April 21, 2025 Meeting Agenda | Call to Order: 7:04pm
Attendance: George Heeren, Amy Hall-Haney, Nicole Schroeder, Gaylen Heetland, Rose Heetland, Lt. Welsh, Matt Wagner, Denise Klemp, Richard
  • Treasurer's Report - Amy Hall-Haney - We are solvent. We have some expenses coming up, including the $200 permit for Safety Fair reimbursement to Nicole Schroeder, $192 to USPS post office box, and $206 for Easter Egg Hunt reimbursement to Amy. We have also received sponsorship checks from David Maier in the amount of $500 for the Safety Fair picnic lunch, and also $500 from Stewart Baxter for helmets.
  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - CRPD offered conditional offers to 10 applicants. 3 of those applicants are already certified. The start date for those new officers will be May 28th. Overflow shelter closed on March 31st, so the uptick in homeless individuals across the city may be more obvious. Shots fired trend down in 2025 on the five-year average, with 9 in 2025.
    • Denise Klemp asked about the recurring police visits to the white house on 17th St SW. This property is being monitored regularly by CRPD. Most recently, the resident was visited for fireworks usage during daylight hours.
  • CRFD Update - Chief Smith - CRFD is in the middle of its hiring process. They will be making job offers later this week with 7 or 8 potential hires for a summer start date. Sunday, April 27th, is the CRFD Spring Open House from 1 to 3pm at Central Fire Station. There will be tours and activities. There is no charge for this, but donations to Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control are appreciated. Information is available on Facebook.
    • George Heeren asked about the garage fire in the Taylor Area Neighborhood. Chief Smith did not have a report this week from the investigator. It’s been a windy and dry spring, so there have been more brush fires than structure fires this spring.
  • SAFE-CR - Matt Wagner - March 2025 had 106 founded calls for services, including 58 owner-occupied properties and 47 rentals. Reminder that May 1 begins lawn care season with the City. Tall grass reporting should happen as you see it; don’t wait until mid-summer to address the issue in your neighborhood. SAFE-CR is working with Waypoint to monitor and offer assistance to encampments of non-housed individuals around Cedar Rapids on public or private properties. Resources are to be offered within 12 business hours.
    • Rose Heetland asked about the small encampment near the Kernels stadium last fall. That individual was assisted, and the City cleaned up that encampment.
    • Gaylen Heetland mentioned the nuisance property on 15th St/8th St SW. It has been purchased by Mike Graf. He’s cleaned it up, and it’s been rented. He’s purchased another commercial property inside CANA limits.
    • Rose Heetland asked about SAFE-CR handling evictions. Matt explained that landlords aren’t advised by SAFE-CR staff on how to handle evictions. They can only offer data to landlords to help make that decision.
  • Tree Program - Denise Klemp - If you live within the boundaries of the Cleveland Neighborhood Association (CANA), you are eligible for a free tree. This project is funded by CANA and in collaboration with Trees Forever. The Tree Delivery Date is May 29, 2025. The trees are between 2 and 6 feet tall. A bucket with a drainage hole and filled with mulch will be included with delivery. An email with planting instructions and details will be sent before delivery. Tree orders are due by Wednesday, May 14th, 2025.
  • Easter Egg Hunt Recap - It was another hit! Very positive feedback from all participants. The format is really preferred to keep parents engaged and kids focused with a bit of competition. We had about 90 kids this year. All nine prizes for ages 3 and under were gifted. Cold weather didn’t deter anyone! Central Church of Christ’s volunteers were so helpful at the event!
  • CANA Community Wellness & Safety Fair 6/21/25 - George has confirmed our food order with HyVee and put in mascot requests. Nicole has eight confirmed booths with three sponsors. Helmets and car seats are TBD. Waiting to hear back from the Safe Kids Linn County rep. Hillside may also grill again this year. George will connect with CR Chain Reaction Bike Hub to get two bikes to give away.
  • Other Business
    • Succession planning for the President position
    • Vice President/Secretary position vacant

Meeting adjourned at 7:46pm.

Next Meeting: Monday, May 19, 2025 at 7:00pm

March 2025 Meeting Minutes

3/17/2025

March 17, 2025 Meeting Minutes | Call to Order: 7:00PM
Attendance: George Heeren, Amy Hall-Haney, Denise Klemp, Nicole Schroeder, Lt. Matt Welsh

  • CRPD Update - Lt. Welsh - Overall, crime is down over the five-year average. The Police department is hiring.  There are currently 20 applicants that are having their backgrounds checked.  Of these 20, 6 are already certified and will not have to receive further training before they can be hired. Hopefully, these applicants can be hired by May 2025. Shots fired in the city are down by 85% from the five-year average and down 50% from last year.  There have been five incidents of shots fired so far in 2025. The overflow shelter will be closing on March 30, 2025.
  • Treasurer's Report - Amy Hall-Haney - There is currently $3,849 in checking.  There are no outstanding bills, and there are no reimbursements from Cedar Rapids due at this time.
  • Easter Egg Hunt 4/19/25 at 10AM at Cleveland Park - Amy Hall-Haney - The annual Easter Egg hunt is scheduled for April 19 at Cleveland Park.  Nicole made a motion to allow Amy Haney to spend up to $300 on items needed for this egg hunt.  There was a second by George Heeren, and the motion passed.  Denise Klemp suggested that games for the children participants could be added after the egg hunt to give them more time to enjoy the event. The Central Church of Christ will again be helping with this event.
  • Idea Queen Marketing Services/Postcard Mailers - George Heeren - In addition to CANA hiring Idea Queen Marketing for email marketing, social media marketing, live streaming operations, and website design assistance, Idea Queen Marketing will help coordinate the Wellness and Safety Fair at no cost to CANA and assist with upcoming postcard mailers. In past meetings, it was approved that CANA would send out quarterly postcards to the neighborhood to let residents know more about CANA and the events and programs that were being planned.  A postcard mailing is being planned for the first half of April to let neighborhood residents know when monthly meetings and events will be taking place. This will hopefullyl encourage more neighborhood involvement in CANA, as there has been very low attendance at meetings.  For CANA to continue to offer/sponsor/support the events and programs that they have been offered in the past, more involvement, including volunteering, from the CANA community is greatly needed. If more support is not forthcoming, such events and programs may make it impossible for these events and programs to continue.
  • Trees Forever Update - Denise Klemp - Denise is working with Trees Forever to purchase trees for the CANA neighborhood tree purchasing that was approved previously.  There are 800 addresses in the CANA neighborhood. Unfortunately, only a limited number of trees can be purchased.  Some neighbors have received letters from the city regarding this, but the entire CANA neighborhood is eligible to receive trees.  The trees from Trees Forever will be smaller and will be in a bucket filled with mulch.  Neighbors must sign up by May 14 to receive a tree that will be distributed on May 29. Vouchers of $100 or $250 are available for a tree.  Vouchers will need to be redeemed at one of the six designated nurseries aligned with the program.  Participants will need to attend an informational meeting to receive a voucher. Another tree distribution will occur at Collins Aerospace on May 3rd.  Participants need to sign up on the Trees Forever website and are eligible to get up to 5 small trees. For more information about Trees Forever, check out their website. It offers many informational videos and links to other sites with tree information.

  • CANA Community Wellness & Safety Fair 6/21/25 from 10AM until 1PM at Cleveland Park - Nicole Schroeder - Invitations will be sent to community organizations and potential sponsors for this in the next two weeks. Social media marketing will begin soon. An event will be published on Facebook and local event calendars to start. The City special event permit and Block ‘N Roll trailer application will need to be completed by April 21st. Nicole will work on this and provide an update to George and Amy by email.
  • Other Business
    • George Heeren, the current CANA president, announced that due to other commitments, he will be stepping down from his office as of June 30. This means that CANA is looking for a new person to take over this position. CANA is also looking for a person to take over the role of secretary after the resignation of Nicole Schroeder back in July 2024.
    • Save the Date: National Night Out - Tuesday 8/6/25
Meeting adjourned at 8:15pm.

Next Meeting: Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:00pm (no live stream)

Join the Cleveland Area Neighborhood Association (CANA) and Cedar Rapids Central Church of Christ for a very special easter egg hunt at Cleveland Park in Cedar Rapids! This is scheduled for Saturday, April 19th at 10am - rain or shine.

This hunt is for ages 0 to 5th grade. This hunt is open to the public. You do not have to be a member of the Central Church of Christ or a neighbor inside CANA limits to attend.

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early, so the hunt can start as close to 10am as possible. No registration is required.

In lieu of a mad dash for eggs, egg hunters will be tasked with finding eggs numbered 1 through 12. The eggs will be turned in for prizes once they have all 12 eggs.
